Description:

The world's first SACD release of a masterful performance accomplished with the best singers of the time, Popp and Weigl! One of the finest performances of Mahler's world, which is detailed yet profound under Tennstedt's reins! The fourth SACD release of the digital recording! A hidden masterpiece featuring Pop and Weigl with new commentary and bilingual lyrics! This disc, recorded in 1985 and the following year with two of the most popular singers of the time, may seem relatively modest among Tennstedt's milestone series of Mahler recordings, but it is a legacy that should be appreciated today as a performance that depicts the traditional concept of "Hornblower" in a more multi-layered way. Tennstedt's view of Mahler, which is guided by an independent and free singer, is deeper and more convincing in terms of content. New SACD conversion from the original digital master in Japan, mastered separately on SACD and CD layers, with new commentary and lyrics translation. This is the last of the session recordings of Mahler's complete symphonies made with the London Philharmonic Orchestra since 1977 (recorded in April 1986; only the organ was recorded in October of the same year). This disc was recorded in February 1985 and March of the following year, just before the last session recording of Mahler's complete symphonies with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, which had been in progress since 1977 (April 1986; only the organ was recorded in October of the same year). The recordings were made over two separate sessions, with the engineer for each track being different (Christopher Parker for tracks 1, 5, 8, and 9, and Michael Sheady for the others), although the data on which tracks were recorded and in which year is not known. Tennstedt's interpretation of Mahler's music is consistent here, and the tension is high in many places, but even in the horns, which were not as widely recorded as the symphonies at the time, he is able to create a clear and original interpretation. While respecting the independence of Popp and Weigl, including the interpretation of the texts, Tennstedt stops at some points to deeply digest the music, as only he can do. It is interesting to note that Popp recorded this piece with Bernstein and DG immediately after this recording, this time in October 1987. Of course, the nuances are quite different, but the labels, conductors, etc. are different. The two conductors who were at the time the world's most popular performers of Mahler's music, and their collaboration reminds me of Ludwig and Kolo's Songs of the Earth in the 1970s, and I think that the two sides of each disc are well represented in the pop version. (The Bernstein recording includes "Original Light," which is not included here.) Weigl also recorded this piece with Inbal later, and it is clear that he was very good at this piece at that time. The result proves that this was the best disc at the time, including the superb expressiveness and vocal quality. In this latest reissue of the digital recording, the SACD format, which is highly compatible with vocal music, improves the texture and allows the listener to hear every detail. Enjoy this masterpiece, which is said to demonstrate one of Mahler's quintessential qualities, in a sound quality that surpasses anything previously available. (1/2)
