Description:

This debut album by Latvian cellist Gunther Arbelet features three works that are said to be inspired by J. S. Bach's "Suite for Unaccompanied Cello," which Pablo Casals brought back into the light of day at the beginning of the 20th century. The "Sonata" by Kodaly, which has become a standard part of the cellist's repertoire. Gaspar Casado, who was also a cellist, will perform his "Suite" (, , ). Vasks composed "The Book" for solo cello while studying at the Latvian National Conservatory of Music. Born into a musical family in Riga, Abele studied at the Basel Music Academy with Ivan Monighetti and Sol Gabetta. He has worked as a soloist and chamber musician, participated in festivals including the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, and worked with Gidon Kremer, Sergio Azzolini, Sofia Gubaidulina, and Vasks. He is the founder and artistic director of the Camerata Basilea, a chamber orchestra in Basel, and the Blu-ray includes the same performance video as the CD, plus a video of a performance of Pablo Casals' "The Song of the Birds.
