Thomas (Tommy) Fortmann is a Swiss-born composer. He began his career in his teens, and it is said that a rock/pop song he wrote at age 17 was released on record in 27 countries. He also tried his hand at professional golf, but at the age of 26, he decided to make a fresh start and began studying composition and orchestration in earnest. Since then, as a composer of contemporary music, he has released a wide range of works, including symphonies, oratorios, chamber music, and stage works. Since the mid-1980s, he has resided in Tuscany, Italy, where he co-founded the music education institution “Accademia Amiata” and has been actively involved in organizing music festivals. This album features a collection of works that showcase his multifaceted style, blending postmodernism, the twelve-tone technique, rock, and jazz. The first half features rock-style art songs based on texts by his close friend, the poet C. Halla, and others, as well as poems by Hofmannsthal written in his youth, performed by a tenor, a soprano, and a piano trio. The second half includes “Dersusse Ton (Sweet Sound),” a tribute to Winterreise that also conveys his feelings for his late mother, who loved Schubert, as well as an arrangement of Winterreise performed by Florian (baritone)—son of the renowned singer Hermann Prey—and a string quartet.
