Robert Kahn's decisive encounter with Brahms was in 1886. From that moment on, his creative path was wide open, especially in chamber music. His works from duets to quintets, while often sounding reminiscent of Brahms, are not mere imitations, but rather he established a rich vocal writing style of his own, and his three piano quartets, Nos. 1 to 3, in particular, occupy an important position as magnificent works with a symphonic breadth of sound. The first of these works, the Piano Quartet No. 1, was written in 1933. Later, the Serenade for String Trio, composed in 1933 on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Brahms' birth, evokes a strong nostalgia for the "good old days" in its lively sound. Although Kahn did not include this work in his official catalog, he said he wrote it "for his own enjoyment," and this honesty shows his sincerity in his music. With the piano of Oliver Trindle, who specializes in the little-known Romantic repertoire, and the intimate performance by the Scandinavian ensemble Giliaux Trio, this is a wonderful opportunity for the listener to hear a piece of music that has been in the works of Kahn for many years.
