Description:
Two recent works by Kalevi Aho (1949-), one of Finland's leading contemporary composers, are included. Both are concertos with unusual orchestration. The first is a concerto for solo alto flute, which has a dark, soft, and calm sound. The first piece is a concerto featuring the alto flute as the solo instrument, which has a dark, soft, and soothing sound. The accompaniment is a simple string ensemble so that the unique tone of the soloist can be appreciated. The piece consists of six movements that are played seamlessly, with some changes to the bass flute. The second piece is a double concerto titled "Concerto for Moonlight," featuring a unique combination of viola and percussion. This piece was written at the initiative of Berlin-based soloists Hiyori Togawa and Alexei Gerasimhes, who also participated in this recording. The composition is strongly influenced by Japanese imagery, and parts of the piece have echoes of gagaku (ancient Japanese court music). The unusual percussion instruments such as the moongongong, waterphone, hang drum, and nine types of Thai gongs that intertwine with the viola's tone are also noteworthy.
