Description:
As a soloist with the Bach Collegium Japan, Carolyn Sampson is a diva known for her elongated voice and perfect coloratura technique in a repertoire that ranges from Bach cantatas to baroque works by Handel and Purcell, as well as Mahler and Stravinsky. This album is her third collection of Schubert songs. Throughout the album, Schubert's love of nature is vividly expressed, and the changes of the four seasons are depicted through the songs. In winter, three songs depict lost love, and in spring, hope spreads with the awakening of nature. In "The Shepherd on the Rock," clarinetist Michael Collins adds a fresh sound to this yodel-like piece. The storyline is one in which the highs of life are expressed in the summer, but uncertainty lingers over the course of love, while the autumn depicts the protagonist's disappointment, and hope fades as nature fades away. Piano accompaniment is by Joseph Middleton, who has performed with Sampson on numerous occasions.
