American Romantic composer and pianist Edward McDowell was born in New York City and briefly studied piano as a teenager at the Conservatoire de Paris,Immediately seeking a musical environment that suited him, he moved to Germany, where he studied piano and composition in Stuttgart, Wiesbaden, and at the Hoch Conservatory of Music in Frankfurt (now the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts), graduating in 1880. He then spent some time in Germany before returning to the United States in 1888. He spent the first eight years of his life in Boston and eventually moved to New York City, where he became the first professor of music at Columbia University. This first collection of orchestral works focuses on one of McDowell's best-known works, a piano concerto that evokes influences of Liszt, Tchaikovsky, and Schumann, and two symphonic poems. McDowell himself was an outstanding pianist, and the concertos demand a high level of technique from the soloist, but Wang Shine, highly acclaimed in the "New York Times" and "Gramophone," plays the brilliant passages beautifully, and beautiful The melody emerges beautifully from the complex piano textures. Lancelot and Hélène, with its Wagner-inspired light motif, is inspired by Arthurian legend, while Lamia was never performed during McDowell's lifetime. The other two pieces are derived from the 11th century tale "The Song of Roland". Also to be heard is the beautiful orchestral sound spun by John Wilson in the orchestral version of his masterpiece "Yorning on a Wild Rose". (Naxos Japan)
