Description:
Kaspar Förster was born in Danzig, studied music with his musician father, and then with Marco Scacchi, who was court music director in Warsaw; from 1638-43 he was a bass singer at the court and conducted the choir, and eventually became court music director to Frederik III in Copenhagen. The war between Denmark and Sweden in 1655 led him to return to Poland, but in 1661 he went back to Denmark to work for Frederik III. He also visited Venice and studied under Giacomo Carissimi, bringing the Italian musical style to Northern Europe and developing it. Most of his works are cantatas with two violins and bass continuo, but this "Sacrae cantiones" is part of the "Fontes Musicae in Polonia" series compiled by the Institute of Musicology at Warsaw University. It contains more than a dozen motets selected from Förster's surviving works. Naxos Japan
