Description:

The Franco-Belgian School, which nurtured Grumiaux, is now back in print! In Belgium, where many violinists are known for their beautiful tone and refined musical interpretation, this 2-CD set carefully reissues rare recordings of Alfred Dubois (1898-1949), a master violinist active in the first half of the 20th century, who succeeded Ysaÿe, a master composer of the Franco-Belgian school. He studied under Alexandre Cornelis, a pupil of Hubert Leonard, a master of the same generation as Fauré and Dandy, and although he was not a student of Ysaÿe, he was active in introducing modern music by actively performing his works, and at the same time was highly regarded for his interpretation of classical masterpieces. He is also known for having nurtured many virtuoso musicians at the Brussels Conservatory, notably Artur Grumiaux, Belgium's foremost virtuoso, who is famous for his masterpieces of the stereo era. Du Bois is well known for his Debussy and Beethoven sonatas reissued by Biddulph, but this time we can listen to a number of small 78rpm recordings made around 1930 by Columbia.Unlike the Biddulph reissue, the piano is played more by Fernand Fuens, who was also a composer, than by Marcel Maas, and it is also nice to know that even Wu-Tang's concerto, recorded in 1930 with the famous conductor Desiree Defau (Defauw) of the same country, is included in the reissue. The music is full of musicality and physical skill. The performances are all from a period when musicality and physical skill were in perfect balance, and the vibrato and portamento, woven in with appropriate moderation and fragrance, enhance the melodic beauty of each work in the most beautiful way possible. The piano of Mr. Fuens, who is a noble pianist of the early 19th century, also contributes to the interpretation of the works with a presence greater than that of the accompaniment, and we are amazed at the depth of taste of these masterful performances that convey to the world the unique Belgian artistry of the same era as Thiebaud and Kreisler.
