The French keyboard music style developed greatly in the latter half of the 17th century, when the Sun King Louis XIV reigned, thanks to the activities of numerous clavesan players/composers. Later, after encountering Italian music, the 18th century saw the emergence of opulent and orchestral sounds. Sempé's interpretation of the rich sound world on the eve of the Classical period, just before the advent of the piano, can be enjoyed to the full, with an awareness of detail and softness.
