Julia Varady, who will celebrate her 80th birthday on September 1, 2021, was born in Hungary and trained in Romania. She married baritone Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau in 1977 and continued to enchant audiences with her extensive repertoire of opera and songs until she announced her retirement in 1998. Considered by many to be the heir to Maria Callas, Varady sang at opera houses around the world, but the axis of his success was always the Bavarian State Opera and other German and Austrian opera houses. This 10-disc box set includes works by Verdi, Puccini, Wagner, Mozart, Richard Strauss, and Tchaikovsky, as well as operatic arias by Verdi, Puccini, and Wagner.
