Description:
The talented pianist, Szymon Trpcevski, bursts into the traditional music of his native Macedonia! Born in Macedonia in 1979, pianist Simon Trpcevski was selected as a BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist and won the Royal Philharmonic Society's Young Artist Award in 2003. He has released many albums on labels such as EMI, ONYX, and AVIE, and has teamed up with artists from his native Macedonia to perform their traditional music. The arrangements are by Shakhov, a Macedonian composer who, like Trpcevski, is active in the UK, and also incorporates jazz idioms. The small pieces are arranged in a set of six pletenki (plait in English). In addition to the piano, clarinet, violin, and cello are featured, as well as the kabal, a folk instrument from the Balkans that resembles a shakuhachi (bamboo flute). The members' songs are also featured, and Trpcevski sings with great feeling in Plait 2, which is directly related to his own childhood. The lively modulation and spacious lyricism of this piece is a perfect match for the music of the Balkans.This is an album that offers a fascinating sound that is reminiscent of Bulgarian folk music, clearly foreign but nostalgic for the Japanese as well.
