KYOTOJAZZSEXTET, a contemporary Japanese spiritual jazz/modal jazz unit, was launched in 2015 by Shuya Okino of the DJ/music producer duo KYOTOJAZZMASSIVE. The classic track “ExtraFreedom,” featured on their second album *Unity* released in 2017, has finally been released on vinyl as a 7” Vinyl-Only Edit by DJ KOCO a.k.a. Shimokita. Side A: ExtraFreedom – DJ KOCO Edit “ExtraFreedom” is one of the album’s standout tracks—a beautiful fusion of spiritual atmosphere and mellow groove—and is also the KyotoJazzSextet’s biggest hit. In this edit, DJKOCO boldly loops a memorable section of the saxophone solo. While preserving the charm of the original track, he has reworked it into a 7" edit tailored for DJ sets, prioritizing the live groove and ease of mixing. The combination of the exhilaration created by the repeating saxophone phrase and the deeply spiritual mood is superb. It’s a heartfelt edit unique to DJKOCO that also feels like a tribute to Pharoah Sanders, whom Shuya Okino deeply admires. Side B: You’ve Gotta Have Freedom – DJ KAWASAKI Rework A cover by the KYOTO JAZZ SEXTET of Pharoah Sanders’ classic track “You’ve Gotta Have Freedom,” originally released on 12” in 2018. Based on the 12" version featuring Navasha Daya and saxophonist Tomoki Sanders—Pharoah Sanders’s son—Shuya Okino has finally realized an idea he’d been nurturing for some time: “I want to create a new version with a different drum pattern.” Soki-Sosei Kimura (formerly of Osaka Monorail) performs the new drum tracks, and DJ KAWASAKI handled the rework. Reconstructed around a drum groove distinct from the original, this is a special version created exclusively for this 7" release. The cover artwork was created by Yusuke Yoshinaga (SollaInc.), who has worked on numerous projects, including KYOTOJAZZMASSIVE. The Japanese title of the 7" Vinyl-Only Edition, “Toward Greater Freedom,” was written by Shuya Okino himself. DJ KOCO and DJ KAWASAKI have each reimagined this spiritual jazz classic by the KYOTOJAZZSEXTET from their own perspectives, transforming it into a 7" record perfect for DJ use. This limited-edition 7" vinyl-only release features special edits and reworks created exclusively for this project on both sides!
