Description:

Natsuki Tamura (tp) and Goko Fujii (p), 9th Duo album in 3 years The maturity brought about by 30 years of time and improvisation that never loses its freshness, the six pieces depict a story. Pianist/composer Goko Fujii and trumpeter Natsuki Tamura recorded this duo album in 2023. This is their ninth duo album in three years, their first being "How Many" in 1996. The six pieces are improvised. The duo has made a career out of improvisation. As with their previous eight albums, the album is full of creativity and surprises. Fujii and Tamura's duo performance has been described as telepathic. It goes without saying that there is a mutual trust and a curiosity that inspires each other. The two play with serenity, clash with a roaring sound, and engage in a unique dialogue of witticisms, sometimes in harmony with elegance and fluidity, creating music. At the same time, however, what is surprising is the total story of the music. The performance is a series of seemingly intangible improvisations, but Fujii's unparalleled talent for composition leads the audience to believe that there is a piece of music, and that it is a large swell of music that tells a story. I like compositions that play like improvised music, and improvised music that sounds like composed music," says Fujii, "and I want to erase the boundaries between the two." The maturity that 30 years of experience has brought to her playing and her ability to keep it fresh never ceases to intrigue me. The recording was made by Mike Marciano at the Samurai Hotel in NYC, a studio with a wonderful Steinway (Model D). He is a master engineer who worked for many years with his brother, the late Joe Marciano, at the now defunct "Systems To" studio, a favorite of many musicians.
