Of all Mahler's symphonies, the Fifth Symphony is considered to be the work that "stepped into a new phase of creation. Mahler himself was aware of this fact, as pointed out by his close friend Bruno Walter and other critics, and he was confident in this "instrumental-only" work, which broke away from the influence of his previous work, "The Wonderful Horns of a Child. This is why Mahler was unhappy that the piece was not well received by the orchestra and audience at its premiere in October 1904, and he later made several revisions with the advice of his wife, Alma. Unfortunately, the "Fifth" did not gain popularity at the time of its premiere, but it was the effective use of the adagietto in Visconti's film "Death in Venice" in 1971 that made it decisively popular. Since then, the Fifth Symphony has ranked as the "most popular symphony. "This 2016 Jansons conducted the Symphony No. 5.One listen to the performance and you will realize how seriously Jansons takes this piece. It is a masterpiece among masterpieces, and many conductors and orchestras have performed and recorded it, and listeners have had opportunities to experience these performances, but Jansons' performance here will bring new discoveries to even the most discerning listener.
