This is the second volume of piano works by composer and pianist Alexander Cherepnin, who was born into a Russian family of artists (his father was Nikolai Cherepnin (1899–1977), a student of Rimsky-Korsakov). Although he began composing at a very young age, his family’s exile to Paris following the Russian Revolution in 1918 led him to form friendships with the French Six, Stravinsky, Ravel, and others, allowing him to master a French-style musical language. This album features relatively early works, comprising a collection of delightful, witty pieces reminiscent of Prokofiev and Rachmaninoff. "Message," Op. 39, composed in 1926, is considered one of Tchelepnin’s masterpieces; its dramatic approach and music brimming with explosive power certainly foreshadowed the “era” to come.
