ROYAL STOCKHOLM PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA

Description:

Bruno Walter in Stockholm First reissue from the original Swedish broadcast source! If you want to hear dramatic Walter, this is it! From the liner notes, Walter was in Europe in the late summer and fall of 1950, appearing at the Salzburg Festival in August, where he conducted two days of orchestral concerts with the Vienna Philharmonic. From this concert, Mahler's Symphony No. 4 and Beethoven's overture to "Egmont" can be heard on CD. On September 4, he conducted the Frankfurt Museum Orchestra (another name for the orchestra of the Frankfurt Opera House), where he performed Mahler's Symphony No. 4. This was his first performance in Germany after World War II. This recording is still in existence. The orchestra then moved to Stockholm for concerts from the 8th to the 14th. On the 24th and 25th, he will visit his birthplace, Berlin, and perform with the Berlin Philharmonic. On October 2, Walter conducted an orchestral concert at the Bavarian State Opera, where he once held the position of general director of the opera house, conducting Schubert's "Unfinished" and Mahler's First Symphony. It is astonishing that at the age of mid-70, Walter was able to keep up with such a long and demanding schedule. It is also remarkable that he was able to keep up with such a long and demanding schedule in his mid-70s, not only because he was full of energy, but also because he was in good physical condition prior to the onset of his heart disease. Mozart's Symphony No. 39 had a very soft sound, as expected. The fresh sensitivity of "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik" is no different from the SP recordings that have been heard for a long time, and there is no sign of aging. The live recording naturally has a lively feel to it. The main program of the concert is "The Great".This is a performance of majestic scale, and the finely chiseled rhythmic pleasure is a delightful performance in the manner of Walter, a great authority on lyrical expression. The only other live recording of this piece is with the NBC Symphony Orchestra, so this release is a welcome addition. Walter was an expert on Brahms as well, but when it comes to the "German Requiem," he is thoroughly serious in his presentation. The Stockholm Philharmonic's "German Requiem" is well known for Furtwängler's 1948 performance, which was given close to Walter's performance. The choirs are also common. It is a well-known fact that this choir is excellent. Walter's performance is as dramatic as Furtwängler's. The second piece in the German Requiem, "All flesh is like grass," is quite flamboyant and dynamic in its approach, and the sixth piece, "Here we are, without the earth," is heroic as well. The conclusion of the seventh piece, "Blessed are the dead, for they shall die in the Lord," is as serene and tranquil as the closing of one's eyelids. It is a performance rich in ups and downs, a dramatic masterpiece that could only come from Walter, an artist who grew up in an opera house. Includes liner notes in English, Japanese, and German.
