[Tower Records "Sony Classical" Special Selections, Season 10] The Verdi "Requiem" by Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra was recorded in 1965 at the Manhattan Center in New York City, a rare occasion. Featuring some of the best singers in North America at the time, including Amara, Forrester, Tucker, and London, as well as the Westminster Chorus, composed of students from Rider University in Princeton, New Jersey, this recording beautifully captures the passionate drama that Verdi entrusted to his work. Also valuable as Ormandy's only recording, the 1965 recording of Rossini's "Stabat Mater" is one of the greatest recorded legacies left to Columbia by Thomas Schippers, the renowned American conductor who died prematurely in 1977 at the age of 47. His skill in commanding a large ensemble with a large orchestra and chorus is a masterpiece.
