Commemorating the 100th anniversary of Kubelik's birth. One of the best interpretations of Schumann's symphonies ever recorded. The nine LPs of performances recorded by the Czech maestro Kubelík for CBS before and after his retirement from the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, where he had been principal conductor for nearly 20 years, are a masterful collection of performances that mark the depth of the master conductor's art at the peak of his maturity. The complete Schumann symphonies recorded during his last season with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra marked the beginning of Kubelík's CBS recordings and was his second recording of the complete works, following the DG recordings with the Berlin Philharmonic in the 1960s. The opposing string parts, which Kubelík favored, and the virtuoso winds of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra work in unison to create a deep sound that shifts delicately and subtly in accordance with the musical phase, and is the very ideal image of Schumann performance. This is one of the last great analog recordings made during a session in Munich's Herkulessaal, which boasts one of the best acoustics in Europe. The 24-bit remastering of the original masters was used.
