In 1969, the Experience disbanded. Hendrix formed the Band of Gypsies with Billy Cox (b), a friend from his army days, and Buddy Miles (ds/vo), who also played with him on "Electric Ladyland". They appeared at the Fillmore East in New York City from New Year's Eve to New Year's in '69-'70. This live album was recorded at that time. This is the only release of the Band of Gypsies, as they disintegrated in mid-air without releasing another studio album after this. It was also the last album Hendrix released before his death. The band, whose members are all black, is characterized by a stronger soul and funk tone than Experience. It is a glimpse of the direction that Hendrix had been aiming for since "Electric Ladyland. The free-flying guitar playing and Miles' soulful vocals are also a highlight of the album. The paper jacket and high-quality Blu-spec CD2 version are only available in Japan!
