The latest release from Billy Childs, one of today’s premier pianists who serves as a “bridge of American music,” blending the structural beauty of classical music with the sensibilities of contemporary music while upholding the jazz tradition! This is his first trio recording in 25 years, from an artist with an astonishing track record of six Grammy Awards and 17 nominations across various genres. The energy and creativity of his touring group—bassist Matt Penman and drummer Ali Hoening—explode on this album. Weaving self-covers of his early recordings with brand-new originals, this masterpiece masterfully expresses the fusion of lineage and evolution. Billy Childs was born in Los Angeles in 1957. He began his professional career in the late 1970s. In 1977, he made his first recording during a Japan tour as a member of the J.J. Johnson Quartet. From 1978, he spent six years with Freddie Hubbard’s band, deeply absorbing the jazz tradition from hard bop onward. He made his solo debut in 1985 with the self-produced album *Midland*. He then released three albums consistently through Windham Hill, including *Take For Example, This* in 1988. He later moved to Chick Corea’s Stretch label, releasing albums such as *I’ve Known Rivers* in 1995 and establishing himself as a leading figure in sophisticated piano jazz. Entering the 2000s, he pioneered the unique field of jazz chamber music (jazz chamber ensemble) and released innovative works. His 2006 album *Lyric, Jazz-Chamber Music Vol. 1* won a Grammy Award, cementing his reputation as a composer. Since then, he has won a total of six Grammy Awards for works such as *Map to the Treasure* (2014), a reimagining of Laura Nyro’s songs, and *Rebirth* (2017), which marked a return to jazz.
