Description: "Love Walked In" by vocalist CHARENEE WADE, who won second prize in the 2010 Thelonious Monk Competition, is a great album, if not very flashy. The pianist Oscar Perez provided excellent backing vocals. Born in Queens, NY, to a father who was a Cuban musician, Oscar Perez is active in Latin jazz, directing his own unit, Nuevo Comienzo, as well as a Latin jazz big band, but he also plays a lot of swing music with a gospel feel. On the other hand, he is also an excellent authentic jazz pianist who often swings with a hint of gospel feeling. He recorded "Prepare a Place for Me" with his trio, Thomson Kneeland (b), who is active in the contemporary scene, and Alvester Garnett (ds), who has been featured by Abbey Lincoln and Regina Carter.The selection of songs is based on a simple four-beat format with standards, but the melodic phrasing and rhythmic playing make you listen to the music all at once. The beautiful tones and tasteful backing are a gem of a performance. This is an ideal authentic piano trio album.
