Exploding Hearts’ masterpiece GuitarRomantic, which packs 10 undisputed masterpieces into a mere 28 minutes, could be described as the equivalent of Ernest Hemingway’s literary works in the realm of punk rock. It contains absolutely nothing superfluous; it is simple, straightforward, and gets right to the point, requiring no embellishments or frills whatsoever. Every creative decision propels the entire work forward. It is, quite simply, perfect. From the moment of its release, the album exuded a powerful, classic vibe that foreshadowed even greater success. However, just three months after its domestic release—just as the band was gaining momentum and Lookout! Records was showing interest—band members Jeremy Gage, Adam Cox, and Matt Fitzgerald, all still in their early 20s, were killed in a tragic van accident, forcing the band to disband. Twenty years later, Guitar Romantic has evolved from a cult classic known only to a select few into a truly acclaimed and highly regarded masterpiece that defines its era. As the years have passed, the album—which now features on countless “best albums” lists—continues to gain even greater recognition. Amid this, following the passing of “King” Louie Bankston—a co-writer on GuitarRomantic—in 2022, the surviving member, Terry Six, decided to entrust the album, which he had long planned to release independently, to a label. He approached Third Man Records exclusively, and the label readily agreed. GuitarRomantic (Expanded & Remastered) is not merely a crisp, polished remaster of the original album. Pat Kearns, the producer of the original album, played back the old open-reel tapes and archived DAT tapes for the first time in 20 years.
