Cutting Through the Clutter: Reiprich’s Polish Music Alexander Reiprich is one of today’s most talked-about conductors. Born in Regensburg in 1968, he studied under Abbado and Gielen and has appeared as a guest conductor with the NHK Symphony Orchestra and the Kioi Sinfonietta. Since 2012, he has become a figure of great interest, notably as the first foreigner to serve as Principal Conductor and Music Director of the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra. This album features works by Lutosławski and Szymanowski, two of the greatest giants in 20th-century Polish musical history. Although these are early works by both composers, their distinct personalities shine through clearly. Lutosławski’s “Concerto for Orchestra” consists of three movements and evokes the influence of Bartók’s work of the same name. As one would expect from a Polish orchestra, the performance naturally brings out the national character of the music. Liepreich’s fast-paced interpretation is also a delight. The Szymanowski work was originally written for piano accompaniment but was given a vivid orchestration by his friend, the conductor Fitelberg. Although based on religious poetry, it sends shivers down the spine with its evocation of Szymanowski’s early, Wagnerian and Richard Strauss-esque world of decadence.
