Altercat reissues, 40 years later, the legendary album by the South American jazz-funk/prog supergroup led by Rubén Rada! La Banda, hailed as “Argentina’s first supergroup.” Altercat is reissuing the band’s sole 1980 album, recorded by a group featuring five Argentine jazz musicians and the legendary Uruguayan Ruben Rada. Ruben Rada, then 35, was in the midst of a difficult period. A failed romantic relationship was followed by a string of poorly attended concerts in Montevideo. Having invented candombe rock with El Quinto and deeply explored jazz-funk with Totem and Opa, he traveled to Buenos Aires in search of a fresh start and formed La Banda with renowned local musicians. Gathered under the leadership of trumpeter Benny Isaguirre, who spearheaded the band, were top-tier musicians active across various genres. Pianist Jorge Navarro, a key figure in the South American jazz scene since the 1950s, was joined by saxophonist Bernardo Barraf, who had honed his skills in “Alma y Vida,” a band representative of Argentine jazz-rock. They are backed by an irresistible rhythm section consisting of bassist Ricardo Sans—a veteran of the Astor Piazzolla Quintet—and drummer Luis Serabolo. In addition, David Lebon, a giant of the Argentine rock scene, and guitarist and producer Daniel Omer joined the session. To top it all off, Hugo Fattoruso, a rare genius from Uruguay, was brought in as an arranger, creating an all-star lineup. Recorded in 1979, La Banda disbanded shortly thereafter. Their brief career and sole album capture the sound of Buenos Aires during a time when the city was still “allowed to breathe.” The album features Ruben Rada’s signature Latin soul tracks like “RockDeLaCalle” and “LaMúsicaEsMiAmor,” alongside a straight-ahead candombe track, “CandombeLlamada,” and heavy jazz-funk numbers like “Malisimo” and “MamaReloj” in the second half—making for a perfect arrangement. This is a must-have gem you won’t want to miss!
