Sorrowful Religious Music by the Holy Roman Emperor Holy Roman Emperor Leopold I was a composer of church music and opera, who was preceded in death by his first and second wives, and whose music conveys both sorrow and a desire for peaceful beauty. Stabat Mater," for four-part chorus, three gambas, violone, cornet, two trombones, and bassoon, opens with a short sonata for strings only, dominated by the deeply sad B minor key. The "Mass for the Dead" (Requiem), written for his first wife, is divided into groups of five voices, strings, and winds. The "Three Lessons" was also written for his second wife, and also has the atmosphere of a requiem. King International
