However, Lili Boulanger became the first winner in 1913, followed by Marguerite Canal in 1920 and Jeanne Leroux in 1923. This album features the works of these three female composers. Although there have been an increasing number of recordings of Lili Boulanger in recent years, the preludes are most welcome. Jeanne Leroux, a piano virtuoso who studied with Marguerite Long and Cortot, gave the world premiere of Ravel's "Ma mère roi" in April 1910. The suite "In Italia" is full of pianistic interest.Marguerite Canal was the first woman to conduct in France, and was also the teacher of the great singer Yoshiko Furusawa when she was a professor at the Paris Conservatory. Motofumi Nagai is a promising young conductor who studied at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music and the Paris Conservatory. He and the Latvian violinist Magdalena Geka, who also performs with him on the Bartók album, are a perfect match in their ensemble. (King International)
