Yale Schola Cantorum & David Hill

Description:

A new album that fully enjoys the charm of each choral work of the U.S. and the U.K., separated by 100 years. British conductor David Hill and the American chamber choir Yale Schola Cantorum have recorded two choral works by British composer Judith Weir (b. 1954) and American composer Amy Beach (1867-1944). The album will be released on the "Hyperion" label. Although separated by a hundred years across the Atlantic, both are significant works. Weir's In the Land of Uz is a new work for chorus, tenor solo voice, and chamber orchestra, with text taken from the Old Testament Book of Job, and was premiered at the 2017 BBC Proms under the direction of David Hill. This is the first commercial recording of the work. Beach's The Canticle of the Sun is a nature-inspired work that the composer himself said he "wrote down the music like a scribbler" in just a few days. Now, with its luminous choral harmonies, Beach is recognized as an integral part of 20th century American classical vocal music. David Hill is known for his outstanding musicianship, and his talents have been recognized with appointments as Music Director of the Bach Choir and Leeds Philharmonic Choir, and Associate Guest Conductor of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. In 2018, he was awarded an honorary medal by the Royal Guild of Organists of Great Britain for his work in choral conducting and organ performance. He was awarded the Medal of Honor by the The Yale Schola Cantorum is a chamber choir founded in 2003 by Simon Carrington, with Masaaki Suzuki as principal guest conductor. Members are drawn by audition from all departments of the prestigious Yale University in the United States, and the group has earned a reputation throughout the country as a mixed chorus of exceptional ability.Supported by the Institute for Religious Music at Yale University, the group performs chants from the 16th century to the present day, and has appeared in concerts and choral services around the world. The 32-member Yale Schola Cantorum is full of young, vibrant voices that respond to David Hill's experienced direction with agility and sensitivity."--BBC Music Magazine Universal Music/IMS
