Beethoven’s “Fate” and Symphony No. 7 Performed by a Double Orchestra! A grand climax celebrating the “Victory of Light Over Darkness,” with the overwhelming power of the crescendo! Conductor Ekilbey, who took the world by storm with “Axanthus,” breaks new ground! Beethoven’s “Fate” and Symphony No. 7 performed by a double orchestra. A double orchestra is, quite literally, a performance by two orchestras: the soft passages are played by a solo orchestra, while the loud passages (including tutti sections) are performed with the addition of a tutti orchestra. This project was launched by conductor Laurent Ekilbey—who took the world by storm with the choral ensemble “Axanthus”—to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Insula Orchestra, which he founded himself. Founded by Ékilbey in 2017, the Insula Orchestra is an orchestra that performs on period instruments. It has focused primarily on German works from the Enlightenment through the Romantic periods. In 2025, the Insula Camerata—an ensemble also using period instruments—was established as an academy for young musicians. This performance will feature a double orchestra comprising the Insula Orchestra and the Insula Camerata. Although Beethoven’s symphonies can be performed by a medium-sized orchestra, large-scale performances featuring 100 to 200 musicians were common in the 19th century. In post-Napoleonic Germany, music festivals featuring large orchestras of 100 to 200 musicians were held. In 1810, the first music festival was held in Frankenhausen, Thuringia, and of the 78 festivals held between then and 1847, at least one of Beethoven’s symphonies was performed at 51 of them. Among these, the “Fifth” and “Seventh” were particularly popular, with the “Fifth” being performed as many as 17 times. The “Fifth” Symphony’s grand architectural structure, the striking contrast between fortissimo and pianissimo, and the magnificent development from the famous opening motif to the C major final movement—featuring the piccolo, contrabassoon, and trombone—achieved maximum effect through the large-scale orchestration. The same was true of No. 7, which thrilled many audiences with its overwhelming rhythmic drive, the eloquence of the second movement, and the vitality of the final movement. The answer to how such a massive orchestra actually performed lies in the “double orchestra” concept. By dividing the musicians into two groups—“solo” and “ripieno”—this method achieved delicate dynamic contrasts despite the large ensemble size. The front “solo” group handled the soft passages, while the rear “ripieno” group joined in with the tutti, creating a natural transition in volume from pianissimo to fortissimo. When this method is applied to Symphony No. 5, four flutes, four oboes, four clarinets, four bassoons, four horns, and four trumpets are arranged on stage. The magnificent climax in the final movement, celebrating the “victory of light over darkness,” is truly breathtaking. Similarly, in Symphony No. 7, the astonishing build-up of tension during the sustained crescendo in the second movement is truly striking. This project serves as a reminder that Beethoven’s symphonies are open musical structures that constantly renew their vitality through diverse performance styles. HARMONIAMUNDI
