Recommended for Carlos Aguirre and Tatiana Perha fans! Long-awaited debut album by Portuguese piano + vocal duo! Katerina Radkova is a Belarusian-born, Portugal-based composer/arranger/pianist/vocalist. In addition to participating in several projects in Portugal, she is a musician with a wide range of connections in South America, including guest appearances with Universo Reflexo, a new generation group from Minas, Brazil, and the superb Argentine duo Envichadero. Caterina formed the duo Singular Lulu Girl with male vocalist João Noves with the aim of exploring the accents and sounds of the Portuguese language. The opening track "Jangada" starts with Caterina's plaintive scat, piano, and Diogo Duque's trumpet, while scat dances by Caterina and João's male and female voices dance like the wind. Diego Cortes plays flute on "Poeminho do Contra," and drummer/percussionist Honatan Sussere, who expresses a variety of nuances, joins on "Travessia," also from Envichadero. The album also features a solo piece by Katerina, "Travessia" featuring percussionist Honatan Soussere. Caterina's solo pieces, "Cantiga sem nome" and "Tu Que Derivas," also showcase the essence of her talent. In terms of classical piano and songs that evoke local folklore, it reminds me of the neo-folklore of Carlos Aguirre and others in Argentina, but perhaps because of the difference in vocal technique and the fact that Katerina is from Belarus, the inspiration of Aguirre and others, this work has a more sinuous atmosphere than La Plata River or Pampa. The air of this work is different from that of "La Plata River" and "Pampa," and is characterized by a more serious atmosphere. Although completely unknown in Japan, this is a gem that will no doubt continue to be active in a variety of places in the future. The jacket, which has a handmade feel with no plastic at all, is also a nice touch.
