Description:

This is the third album from Kurt Vile, a singer-songwriter and producer originally from Philadelphia, released on Verve. It’s an album that expresses his love for his hometown of Philadelphia, where he still lives and records most of his music. The album is packed with his signature jangly guitar sound, uplifting instrumental sections, and lyrics that are both cheeky and sentimental. Produced primarily by Vile himself, with contributions from Langellotti, keyboard virtuoso Matthew Jugenheimer, drummer Kyle Spence, guitarist Jesse Trbovrich, and longtime Violators engineer Rob Schnapf, this album marks a return to Weil’s home-recording roots while simultaneously establishing his unique style as a producer. Using tools honed through years of use, he packed the album with an overflowing warmth. “I was waiting for those natural elements to reappear in my recordings, just like in the old home-recording days,” he says. “I think I’ve finally captured that again. The sound quality is better than before, though. It doesn’t feel overly polished, but it still sparkles quite a bit.” He says he’s particularly proud of the sparkling lead guitar melodies he drew from an old Gretsch Tennessean once owned by Travis Good of the Sadies, a longtime friend and “one of my true heroes.”
