Description:

The French pianist Jean-Marc Louissada, born in Tunisia in 1958, began playing the piano at the age of six and studied with Marcel Champy and Denise Rivière in Paris. At the age of 16, he entered the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique in Paris, where he studied piano with Dominique Merlet and others. His success at the Chopin Competition launched him on the path to an international career. Since then, he has earned a reputation as a unique interpreter of Chopin. In 2005, he appeared as an instructor on "NHK Super Piano Lessons - Chopin Edition," to great acclaim. Luisada was one of the teachers of Hayato Kakuno, who performed at the Chopin Competition in 2021, and Kakuno took lessons from Luisada in Paris before going to Warsaw.Between 1998 and 2013, Luisada recorded Chopin's works intermittently for RCA, including the complete Mazurkas, Waltzes, and Ballades, Piano Sonata No. 3, Fantasy, Fantasy Polonaise, Boat Song, Scherzo Nos. 2 and 4, and the chamber version of Piano Concerto No. 1 (with the Tarich Quartet). The album is a dense, Cortot-like work. This is the right wing of a Chopin performance with dense emotion reminiscent of Cortot-, with noble tone, exquisite tempo swings, and a unique balance of the inner voices, all qualities that are extremely rare in modern Chopin performances. In particular, CD7, recorded at Ohga Hall in 2007, is a masterpiece of Ruizada's qualities, beginning with "Lento con grande espressione" and closing with Waltz No. 3, which is also exquisitely composed. The Ballades (CD 1), recorded in 2010 at the Salamanca Hall in Gifu, Japan, is a terrifyingly deep dive into the inner workings of the piece, and the devastating power of the coda to Ballade No. 4, which Luisada describes as "reminiscent of Chopin's heartbeat" at the beginning, is unmatched. The 2013 waltz collection (CD3), produced by Cord Gerben, also known for his Michelangeli recordings, is extremely unique in that it is more subdued than the old DG recordings and creates a distinctly somber mood.MusicWeb International said of these recordings, "The most wonderful aspect of Luisada's artistry is his attempt to explore the essence of Chopin's music. Taking full advantage of the modern Steinway, he expresses the world and spirit of Chopin's sound in sound." ClassicsToday also wrote of Luisada's Chopin, "I cannot be distracted from this performance for a moment. All of Luisada's Chopin recordings for RCA are now available in one package for the first time as a 7-CD box set. (1/2) Sony Music
