Rodelinda, who swore fidelity to her dead husband and protected her only son, is confronted with trials from Grimoaldo (the man who sent her husband to his death) and his black-hearted subordinate Garibaldo, who presses her to marry him, and Rodelinda's husband Bertaldo, thought dead, is actually not dead and appears before Rodelinda's eyes. The story is full of ups and downs. Completed on January 20, 1725 and premiered on February 13, 1725 at the King's Theatre Haymarket, it was performed 13 times during the 1725 season and again 8 times in December of that year.
