Leading indie-folk singer-songwriter Iron & Wine completes a new album. Seven years after their previous album, "Light Verse," a return to Sub Pop and a Grammy nomination, their seventh album in total, is released. When the pandemic began and the world closed in, Sam Beam, aka Iron & Wine, also stopped creating. In its place came a homelike time that the singer had not felt for a long time. But while there were many rewards, making music was not one of them. I feel blessed and grateful that I and most of my friends and family made it through the pandemic relatively unscathed compared to so many others." The last thing I wanted to write about was Kovit, and yet every time I picked up my pen, that thought remained in a corner and wouldn't leave the edge. This went on for over two years," Beam says, looking back on that time. A session in Memphis with friend and producer Matt Ross-Spang to record a Lori McKenna song for the EP "Lori" marked the beginning of his journey back.This cathartic experience restored Beam's love of making music, and eventually the paralysis subsided and he began writing lyrics and booking studios for the work that would later become "Light Verse". Light Verse was recorded at Waystation, his studio in Laurel Canyon, with engineer/mixer Dave Way (additional sessions with a 24-piece orchestra took place at the Silent Zoo studio), with Tyler Chester, Sebastian Steinberg, David Garza, Griffin Goldsmith, Beth Goodfellow, Kyle Crane, and Paul Cartwright. And Fiona Apple contributed vocals to the duet "All In Good Time".The album may be Iron & Wine's most playful, Beam says, but the title reflects the fact that the songs were born with joy after the heaviness and anxiety of the pandemic. Whereas recent albums such as "Beast Epic" and "Weed Garden" had a disturbing air of middle-aged vulnerability and hurt, the songs on "Light Verse" replace it with acceptance and focus. Light Verse is Iron & Wine's seventh full-length album and fifth for Sub Pop.
