Ivan Jenati, the world-renowned violinist and pride of the Czech Republic, has released a highly anticipated new recording of F. Benda’s violin concertos alongside his compatriots, the prestigious Prague Philharmonia! Although performance opportunities have naturally diminished compared to his heyday, Benda was one of the most renowned virtuosos in 18th-century Europe. Born in 1709 into a Czech musical family, Benda was actively involved in music from a young age. After establishing himself primarily in Eastern Europe, he was invited to the Prussian court through an introduction by Quantz. Benda, who enjoyed the deep trust of Frederick II—then still a prince—later served as the court’s principal violinist. He composed a total of 17 violin concertos, and this album features four of the finest gems from that collection. Against a backdrop of dynamic ensemble playing—reminiscent of Vivaldi’s concertos—brilliant violin solos, richly infused with virtuosic flair, resound throughout.
