Gluck’s *The Mercy of Emperor Titus*, “The False Gardener” by Anfossi, and other complete recordings of little-known operas from the Baroque to Classical periods—Werner Ehrhardt and Larte del Monte have released these in rapid succession, and it seems they have become the main artists on the German label Harmonia Mundi. Their latest recording is a collection of symphonies by the German Classical-era composer Sterkel. Johann Franz Xaver Sterkel (1750–1817) served as organist in Neumünster from 1768 while studying theology. He was later appointed court musician to Elector Friedrich Karl Joseph Freyler von Eherthal in Mainz. He was one of the most popular composers of his time, alongside Mozart, Clementi, and Kozeluf, and was also active as a pianist; it is said that in Paris, he was even more popular and celebrated than Haydn. Sterkel composed extensively across all genres, weaving lyrical melodies into his works while adhering to the style of the Mannheim School. This compositional approach had a major influence on later composers such as Beethoven, Schubert, and Weber. The symphonies included here are also said to have greatly influenced the composition of Beethoven’s Symphonies Nos. 1 and 2; they are brimming with bright, refreshing energy, and Werner Ehrhardt & L’Arte del Monte masterfully bring Sterkel’s music—which was cutting-edge for its time—back to life for modern audiences.
