The Vienna Philharmonic's New Year's Concert of Waltzes and Polkas Every year on January 1, the Vienna Philharmonic performs its New Year's Concert. The New Year's Concert is one of the most famous classical music events in the world, and is broadcast from Vienna's golden Musikvereinsaal to more than 70 countries around the world via TV and radio, reaching 400 million viewers. The 2013 concert will feature Franz Welser-Möst (b. 1960), a brilliant Austrian composer, who will perform the Strauss family's waltzes and polkas.Since his debut with the Vienna Philharmonic in 1988, he has been one of the most important conductors of the orchestra, holding the posts of General Music Director of the Cleveland Orchestra since 2002 and of the Vienna State Opera since 2010, In 2011, he appeared at the New Year's Concert, becoming the first Austrian conductor to appear at this concert since Karajan. In addition to the standard works such as "The Blue Danube" and "Racoczi March," the program includes a work that will be performed for the first time in the history of the New Year's Concert.
