Ian Bostridge's first appearance on the Hensler label! A collection of songs by the Swiss early Romantic composer Friedrich Theodor Fröhlich! Ian Bostridge, a leading Lieder singer of the 21st century with his intellectual approach, versatile and beautiful voice, and sensitive narration, makes his first appearance on the German Hensler label! The songs are by the early Swiss Romantic composer Friedrich Theodor Fröhlich (1803-1836), who showed talent as a composer even as a teenager, studying law in Basel in 1822, but later pursued a career in music and studied with Carl Friedrich Zelter in Berlin. He studied composition in Berlin under Carl Friedrich Zelter (1758-1832), Bernhard Klein (1793-1832), and Ludwig Berger (1777-1839). During this time he also became acquainted with the young Felix Mendelssohn, who composed numerous songs, choral works, string quartets, and symphonies in his 20s. Many of his song cycles were published in Germany during the same period. Still unable to earn a living in Berlin, he returned to Switzerland in 1830. Thereafter, he worked as a teacher at a music school and conducted a choir and an amateur orchestra.However, in addition to financial insecurity, the breakdown of her marriage and her low reputation in her own country made her desperate, and in October 1836, she committed suicide by drowning herself in the River Aare. Fröhlich composed this song cycle from works in Wilhelm Müller's (1794-1827) collection of poems, "John and Esther. The songs also discuss the interfaith love affair between a Christian and a Jewish believer, an unauthorized practice at the time. Bostridge recorded this collection with the famous pianist Julius Drake. King International
