Composed of Koeun Yang on violin, Kang-Ho Lee on cello, and Hee-Sung Joo on piano, all of whom share a common background as graduates of the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, the Tonus Trio relocated its performance base to Korea after a successful 10-city tour of the northeastern United States and the Russian repertoire, The trio has performed the complete Brahms and Beethoven piano trios with great success. Violinist Yang Koun won a prize at the 1991 Paganini International Music Competition, marking a remarkable accomplishment for a Korean-born performer who had never studied abroad to win a prize at a prestigious international music competition (she won the prize before coming to the United States).Cellist Lee Kang-Ho also performed with the Seoul City Symphony Orchestra at the age of 12, and pianist Joo Hee-Sung was praised by critic Jeffrey Crankshaw after hearing his recital in London: "From the moment I heard the first bars of Bach, I knew that I was a true artist." He was praised as "a true artist from the moment I heard the first bars of Bach.
