Description:
Hinastera (1916-1983) celebrated the 100th anniversary of his birth in 2016. Along with Astor Piazzolla, Carlos Gardel, and Mauisio Kargel, he is one of Argentina's greatest composers. His works are strongly influenced by the Argentinean music of the time, and his style is relatively clear and accessible, but his compositional style varied considerably depending on the period of composition. The four works included here all belong to his later period, which he himself classifies as "neo-expressionist" music with an avant-garde style and adventurous ideas. One of the most interesting pieces is the Variations on the "Song of the Watchman" by the Catalan cellist Casals, in which the elegance of the original is transformed by Hinastera into a colorful music full of exciting sounds. The small "Concerto for Strings" begins in a contemplative mood and gradually builds to a fever pitch, culminating in the final movement with a world of screaming. It is a passionate work similar to the famous Toccata (the last movement of the piano concerto). Tamayo, who excels at contemporary music, brings these tumultuous pieces together beautifully.
