This album features two piano trios by two great Russian composers whose artistic creativity was inspired by the deep grief caused by the death of a loved one. Tchaikovsky's Piano Trio, also known as "In Memory of a Great Artist," was composed as a memorial to Nikolai Rubinshtein, to whom he had a very close relationship and to whom he dedicated his own works. It is a long and technical work dominated by a solemn atmosphere. Shostakovich's Piano Trio No. 2, on the other hand, is dedicated to his close friend and advisor, the musicologist and critic Ivan Sorelczynski. Shostakovich was said to be filled with unspeakable grief at the news of his passing. These two pieces of heartbreaking music are performed by Trio Arriaga, known as one of the leading piano trios of their generation in Spain.Each member of the ensemble boasts an international track record as a soloist, having won numerous competitions and released numerous CDs, and their extremely high-level performances have been highly praised by Gramophone magazine and BBC Music Magazine.
