In his previous Telemann album (GCD 920417), Paolo Pandolfo, a revolutionary of viola da gamba, recorded "Fantasia for Solo Viola da Gamba" which was rediscovered for the first time in about 280 years and made a big splash as it was selected as a "Record Art Special Edition. This new recording by the world-class virtuoso of the viola da gamba, the pride of Italy, is an album for the viola bastarda, an instrument belonging to the viol family that was created for free improvisation, and is truly a remarkable program unique to the genius Pandolfo. Francesco Lognoni's "Selva de varii passaggi 1620" describes "the queen of all instruments for ornamentation, the viola bastarda is neither tenor nor bass, but somewhere in between," and is characterized by technical and ornate playing with brilliant ornamentation. This album includes the original madrigale or chanson and the viola bastarda improvised from it in turn.Paolo Pandolfo, who has demonstrated his talent for improvisation on albums such as "Travel Notes (GCD P30407)," "Improvisando (GCD P30409)," and "Kind of Satie (GCD P30416)," has now brought his flamboyant virtuosity to the fore.
