Description:
A masterful piano-driven singer-songwriter work with a self-released South African release in 1976, featuring a self-released disc-style atmosphere. Born in Zimbabwe in 1949, John Oakley-Smith came of age at a time of political and military tension during the independence wars of the 1960s and 1970s, and moved to South Africa to escape conscription and go to college. He later became an important figure in the folk music underground theater scene based at the Troubadour Club and Chelsea Hotel in Johannesburg, and released a small pressing of "Matinees on Saturdays" with the support of the independent label 3rd Ear Music Matinees on Saturdays. Later, during the singer/songwriter boom of the 1970s in the U.K. and the U.S., he wrote and recorded songs in South Africa between 1973 and 1975, and released this album in 1976. It is a beautiful work that weaves intimate and poetic stories into melancholic songs with an ironic attitude and sharp wit, and has a delicate and brilliant piano-driven production. This is the first reissue of the album since its original release in 1976.
