The complete organ works of Maurice Duruflé, famous for his "Requiem". Recorded by Thomas Trotter on the large organ of King's College Chapel! Maurice Duruflé (1902-1986), one of the most famous French organists of the 20th century, was a composer of great works. As an organist, he recorded "J.S. Bach: Preludes and Fugues" with his wife Marie-Madeleine Duruflé in the 1960s, which is known as a highly acclaimed masterpiece. His masterpiece as a composer is the "Requiem. The sublime and beautiful world is well known to classical music fans, and his organ works are also reminiscent of the "Requiem" with their harmony and warmth. Duruflé studied composition at the Paris Conservatory with Vidor and Ducasse, and organ with Gigueux, and in 1927 became assistant to Vierne at Notre Dame Cathedral, where he was trained. Despite his longevity, Duruflé was very cautious as a composer, and only 14 of his works, including the Requiem, have been published, most of them for organ. This album contains all of his solo organ works, including his posthumous "Meditations," published by Durand in 2002. His organ works have the colorful registrations typical of French composers.In particular, "Prelude and Fugue in the Name of Alain, Op. 7," dedicated to the composer Jean Alain (brother of Marie-Claire Alain), who died at the age of 29 in World War II, is an emotionally rich work that expresses Duruflé's respect for Alain as well as his grief over the loss of his talented younger colleague. The other works are all impressive for their beautiful melodies while requiring the skillful technique typical of an organist. Thomas Trotter was the 14th organist to be appointed Organ Scholar at King's College Cambridge in 1976. Since then, he has been the resident organist at St. Margaret's Church, Westminster Abbey, and has performed with the King's College Choir of Cambridge, as well as recording Mozart's organ works, and was honored by Queen Elizabeth on St. Celicia's Day 2020 with the " Queen's Medal for Music" by Queen Elizabeth.
