LSO & Gardiner Mendelssohn's Third Symphony in Three Movements of Two Kinds! Sir John Eliot Gardiner conducts the London Symphony Orchestra in the third installment of the Mendelssohn Series. When Mendelssohn came to London in 1829, he performed his own symphony and wrote to his parents: "I have looked over my symphony again, and, oh God, the Menuet is so tedious that it brings tears to my eyes! So I took out the octet scherzo, added a little trumpet, and it's so much better. In fact, Mendelssohn made quite a few alterations, making the orchestration glorious. It is so wonderful that I thought you all should hear it. But what about the Minuet and the Trio? Why did he, at the stage of publication, adopt the minuet and trio and eliminate the scherzo? I think both are noteworthy, and both would make a great symphony as a whole.Thus, Gardiner performs two third movements: the Minuet from 1824, composed by Mendelssohn, and the Scherzo from the 1829 "London Edition". No. 4 "Italia" is a delight from the first movement's opening piquant rhythms and the interplay of the wind instruments. The LSO's skill is evident in the sharpness of the final movement.
