Description:

The live recording of the landmark concert that kicked off the 2005–06 season is already here! C. Davis and the LSO present the latest Sibelius work! The “Klervo Symphony,” a monumental work brimming with dazzling energy—Davis and the LSO performed “Klervo” at the opening concert of the 2005–06 season. Although not included on this recording, it is reported that the Symphonic Fantasy “The Daughter of Pohjola” was also performed that evening. For this duo, who are once again working on a complete Sibelius collection as part of the LSOLive series, this marks their first re-recording since 1996. The “Klervo,” a monumental work consisting of five movements, is based on the national epic “Kalevala” and is a landmark piece that catapulted the young Sibelius to fame throughout Finland. The third movement serves as the centerpiece of the entire work. Capturing the very excitement of a live performance, the orchestra—and especially the male chorus—sings powerfully in unison in a manner that is astonishingly dramatic and truly awe-inspiring! Furthermore, the soloist—already a veteran of “Klervo singing”—delivers a deeply emotional exchange. In the following fourth movement, the orchestra’s prized, powerful brass section explodes with show-stopping brilliance, making this movement utterly captivating! Davis is known for his exceptional enthusiasm when tackling works that feature vocal parts. Even though this is Sibelius—a composer to whom he has devoted his heart and soul—it must have been a long-cherished dream of his to dare present such an ambitious program at such an important venue. The concert was a resounding success, thanks in part to the deep trust he places in his musicians, making it all the more moving. A few days later, it appears he conducted a program in Belgium featuring Schumann’s concerto and Walton’s Symphony No. 1 in collaboration with Mitsuko Uchida (I certainly hope this is released on CD if possible), and the ever-growing depth of Davis’s artistry is attracting significant attention.
