Richard Strauss’s *Salome* was a new production that garnered significant attention at the 2018 Salzburg Festival, alongside Staier’s production of *The Magic Flute*. Directed by Romeo Castellucci, featuring Asmik Grigorian as Salome, and conducted by Franz Welser-Möst, this was a highly anticipated performance. In particular, the overwhelming vocal prowess and stage presence of Lithuanian-born Asmik Grigorian made this one of the festival’s highlights. Grigoryan had already drawn attention at the 2017 Salzburg Festival for her role as Marie in *Wozzeck*, and this time as well, she captivated the audience with her powerful singing paired with a delicate, almost girlish appearance. Director Romeo Castellucci is still fresh in our memories for his new production of *Tannhäuser*, presented during the Bavarian State Opera’s 2017 tour of Japan; this production featured a dimly lit stage utilizing the rock walls of the Felsenreitschule. Salome, clad in white, stands there; the corpse of the beheaded John the Baptist sits in a chair, with his head rolling at his feet—a grotesque scene that also features a horse’s head and a corpse in a sack.
