Rameau's opera "Platée," directed by Robert Carsen and conducted by William Christie and Les Arts Florissants, was staged at the Theater an der Wien in December 2020. This production was presented as a new production in 2014, with Paul Agnew conducting in Christie's place due to his indisposition. Rameau's "Platée" was first performed in 1745. It is a comedy about Plateaus, the frog queen, and the Greek gods. In this Robert Carsen production, the mythological events are reread and take place in the world of Parisian haute couture. The great god Jupiter is portrayed as a model for Karl Lagerfeld (1933-2019), the emperor of fashion. Karl Lagerfeld is a "legend" who led the fashion world for many years as the designer of Chanel and Fendi.The original and modern production, including the appearance of a Chanel-like brand mark, a real cat modeled after Karl Lagerfeld's beloved Choupette, and intense dancers dancing to baroque music, has been the talk of the town since its first performance, and its visualization is a joy to behold. The production also raises issues that are occurring in the fashion industry and contemporary society, such as discrimination caused by judging people based on beauty or ugliness, and the sinfulness of consumer society.
