Description:
Celebrating the 250th anniversary of Beethoven's birth, the definitive Beethoven video products! The complete symphonies by Thielemann & the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and the Missa Sole by the Staatskapelle Dresden on 4 Blu-ray discs are now available at a special price! In 2020, Beethoven (1770-1827) will celebrate the 250th anniversary of his birth, and labels will release Beethoven's works one after another in this commemorative year. The "BEETHOVEN9" is a 4-disc Blu-ray re-release of the complete symphonies by the Vienna Philharmonic and Thielemann, and the Missa solemnis by the Staatskapelle Dresden and Thielemann. The Beethoven Cycle by Thielemann and the Vienna Philharmonic, entitled "BEETHOVEN 9," was performed at the Musikvereinsaal from December 2008 to April 2010 to great acclaim. This BD contains footage of the concert in its entirety, as well as a lengthy and very interesting conversation between Thielemann and the renowned critic Joachim Kaiser. Of Beethoven's symphonies, Thielemann says, "In all nine symphonies, Beethoven opened up different worlds. And he planned to do this from the very beginning." Thielemann said. In this performance, Thielemann asked the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra to use the usual double-winged violin style, but the instrumentation varied according to the individual works, from small to medium size for Nos. 1 through 8, and a large orchestra for No. 9, perhaps in light of historical facts. The orchestra shows a flexible attitude. The live performance of Beethoven's "Missa Solemnis" with the Staatskapelle Dresden in 2010, before Thielemann took over as chief conductor. During the final stages of World War II, from February 13 to 15, 1945, Dresden was bombed by British and American Allied forces, destroying much of the city and claiming the lives of 30,000 to 150,000 civilians. After the war, the Staatskapelle Dresden held the annual "Memorial Concert for the Dresden Bombing Victims" on February 13 and 14, the same days that the city suffered the unprecedented war damage known as the "Bombing of Dresden. The Staatskapelle Dresden has been holding the "Dresden Bombing Memorial Concert" every year. Against this backdrop, Thielemann's performance of "Missa Solemnis" with the Staatskapelle Dresden, which he will assume as chief conductor in the 2012 season, was a powerful and enthusiastic performance, showing the trust the orchestra has in him even before his appointment.
