Handel (1685-1759)

Description:

Handel's late masterpiece oratorio "Theodora" on stage at the Salzburg Festival on video! Schaeffer, Mehta and Fink! Theodora" is an English-language oratorio composed in 1749, in the last years of Handel's life, and is one of his original vocal masterpieces, preceding "Jephthah," which he composed in 1759. The story is the legend of the martyrdom of Theodora, a Christian who is said to have been in Alexandria, Egypt, in the early 4th century. During the reign of the Roman Emperor Diocletian, the emperor was persecuting the growing number of Christians, while at the same time he was forcing women to give birth and punishing them if they violated the law in order for the Romans to prosper. Theodora, of Roman noble blood, converted to Christianity and remained a virgin, never marrying, in order to live her faith. Theodora is soon subjected to oppression, and she is sent to a brothel as punishment. However, Didymus, a soldier who has also converted to Christianity, shows up to rescue her and lets her go in exchange for a costume. But this time, Didymus is sentenced to death, and Theodora, upon learning of this, chooses to be executed along with Didymus. Handel's oratorio follows almost in this vein. The major characteristic of "Theodora" is that it has a tragic ending in which the two are dragged to the execution, in contrast to the happy ending that was promised in operas and oratorios of the time. However, this novelty proved to be a setback, and the premiere on March 16, 1750, was a failure. Today, it is rather highly regarded as an ambitious work from Handel's last years. The performance at the Salzburg Festival in 2009, recorded here, was directed by Christoph Roy.A huge pipe organ is set in the background, and the people are dressed in simple black costumes, with only Theodora, who was sent to a brothel, in a red dress. This simple stage design makes for an impressive performance that quietly spreads the grief of the oppressed on their way to martyrdom. Among the singers, Christine Schaefer's focused singing of Theodora and the didymus of Bejun Mehta, now very popular as a top countertenor, were highly acclaimed. Also, Bernarda Fink as Theodora's Christian companion Irene is a lavish casting. The Freiburg Baroque Orchestra, conducted by Ivar Bolton, kept the excitement alive with restrained and transparent music that matched the direction of the production. Please enjoy the clear image of Handel's ambitious works in his later years!
